Standing Desk for Work From Home: How to Set It Up and Use It Daily

If you've just bought a standing desk for work from home, the flat box is probably leaning against the bedroom wall while your laptop still lives on the dining table. Making it work is simpler than the box suggests. Put it near a power point with the window to your side, set one height for sitting and one for standing, and switch every 30 to 60 minutes instead of standing all day.

Still choosing a desk? Our height adjustable study table buying guide covers that. This post is about living with one.

Where should a standing desk for work from home go?

Start with the floor, not the desk. A Wrick Solo or Wrick Plus needs a 120 x 60 cm patch, and the Wrick L-Shape needs 150 x 150 cm. Leave approx. 75 to 90 cm behind it for your chair, otherwise you'll bang the chair into the bed every time you get up.

A bedroom corner or the hall?

In a 2BHK, the bedroom corner usually wins because you can shut the door for calls. Just face the desk towards a wall, not the bed, or that "five-minute lie-down" starts calling at 3 pm. Our small bedroom ideas can free up floor space. The hall has more light, but also the TV and the doorbell, so pick the wall furthest from the main door. Sharing a wall with the TV? See our wall mounted TV unit guide.

What about a window or balcony door?

Keep the window to your side. Behind the monitor it makes you squint, and behind you it throws glare on the screen. In the monsoon, keep the desk back from a balcony door, because blowing rain isn't kind to an engineered wood top.

Does it work in a rented flat?

Yes. A standing desk is freestanding, so there's nothing to drill. It does need a level floor, because old tiles or a slight slope make any desk wobble more at standing height.

Where's the plug? Power points, inverters and UPS

A standing desk for work from home like the Wrick is electric, so the controls need power to move the top. Pick a spot near a wall socket, not one that needs an extension board across the room.

Then think about power cuts. If the power goes while the desk is up, it will usually stay up until the supply returns. If you have an inverter or UPS, ask your electrician whether the socket near your desk is on the backed-up circuit, since many homes only back up lights and fans. Honestly, if cuts are rare where you live, don't worry much.

Standing desk setup ergonomics: how high should everything be?

For a standing desk for home office use, ergonomics mostly comes down to your elbows, your eyes and your feet.

Elbows and wrists. Drop your shoulders, let your arms hang, and bend your elbows to about 90 degrees. The keyboard goes at that height or a touch below. If you shrug to type, the desk is too high. If your wrists bend upwards, it's too low.

Monitor height and distance: the top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away (approx. 50 to 70 cm). Nice surprise: with the desk at elbow height in both positions, a monitor set right for sitting stays right when you stand.

Feet and mat: sitting, feet flat on the floor or a footrest. Standing, shift your weight now and then. Vitrified tiles feel fine for ten minutes and tiring after forty, so a cushioned mat helps.

Approximate desk heights by your height

Your height Sitting (approx.) Standing (approx.) On a Wrick (70 to 110 cm)
4'11" to 5'1" (150 to 155 cm) 58 to 61 cm 94 to 97 cm Sit at 70 cm, chair raised, footrest
5'2" to 5'4" (157 to 163 cm) 61 to 64 cm 98 to 101 cm Same for sitting
5'5" to 5'7" (165 to 170 cm) 64 to 67 cm 102 to 105 cm Raise the chair a little
5'8" to 5'10" (173 to 178 cm) 67 to 70 cm 106 to 109 cm Fits both ways
5'11" to 6'1" (180 to 185 cm) 70 to 73 cm 110 to 113 cm Standing at or near the top

Say you're 5'3". Your sitting height is roughly 62 cm, below the Wrick's 70 cm minimum. That's normal. Set the desk at 70 cm, raise your chair to elbow level and use a footrest. The Solo and L-Shape have a digital display with memory presets, so save both heights once.

How long to stand at a standing desk per day

Less than you think. Most people new to a standing desk for work from home overdo it in week one. Mainstream ergonomics advice is to start with standing spells of about 15 to 30 minutes and switch every 30 to 60 minutes, building up over a couple of weeks. A sensible goal for many people is a couple of hours of standing in total (approx.), spread across the day. If your legs ache, sit down. If you have varicose veins, a back or knee problem, or you're pregnant, check with your doctor first.

Calls are the easiest time to stand, because you aren't typing much. A sample day:

Time (approx.) Task Position
9:00 to 9:30 Emails Standing
9:30 to 10:30 Focused work Sitting
10:30 to 11:00 Team call Standing
11:00 to 1:00 Focused work Sitting, with a 15-minute stand
2:00 to 2:30 Post-lunch slump Standing
2:30 to 5:00 Deep work Sitting, with a 15-minute stand
5:00 to 5:30 Wrap-up call Standing

Standing desk vs normal desk for work from home

A normal study table is fixed at about 72 to 76 cm. A standing desk for work from home earns its place when your days are long or your spouse or teenager uses the same desk after you.

Feature Standing desk (Wrick) Normal desk
Height 70 to 110 cm, by button Fixed, usually 72 to 76 cm
Posture Sit and stand Sitting only
Shared use Each person sets their height One height for all
Power Needed for the controls Not needed
Storage Open top; add shelves Often built in
Price Higher Lower

If you work from home two days a week and want shelves more than height, a fixed desk from our study table range may suit you better.

Standing desk benefits and drawbacks, honestly

The big benefit of a standing desk for work from home is changing position without leaving your work. Standing for a call breaks up long sitting, and plenty of people feel more awake for it in the afternoon.

The drawbacks are real. Standing all day isn't healthy either, and usually means sore feet. The desk costs more, needs a socket and hums when it moves. Some people stand for a week, then leave it at sitting height for good. The goal is moving more, not standing more.

Standing desk for laptop users

Plenty of people run a standing desk for work from home with nothing but a laptop. Its screen and keyboard are joined, so you can't get both at the right height at once. Flat on the desk, you look down all day. Raise the desk to bring the screen up, and you reach up to type.

The fix is cheap. Put the laptop on a laptop stand so the screen top is near eye level, and use a separate keyboard and mouse at elbow height. For full-time work, I'd add a monitor later. The Wrick Plus has a fixed monitor stand built in, and on a Solo our Norel monitor stand (30 x 20 cm, height adjustable) lifts the screen. For the sofa, a portable laptop table is cheaper.

Standing desk setup cable management when the desk moves

Every wire to the wall has to stretch through the Wrick's 40 cm of travel. Too short, and the monitor gets yanked. Too loose, and the jhadu catches it.

  1. Tie one extension board to the frame under the top with cable ties, and plug everything into it, so only one cable runs to the wall.
  2. Raise the desk to 110 cm and leave that cable a small loop of slack.
  3. Run it down one leg with velcro ties or adhesive clips, which come off cleanly in a rented flat.
  4. Lower the desk slowly once and check nothing gets pinched.

Video call setup at both heights

With a laptop flat on the desk, the camera looks up at you and your team gets a fine view of the ceiling fan. Raise the laptop, or clip a webcam on your monitor, to bring the lens near eye level. Check the framing once sitting and once standing.

Light matters more than the camera. Face a soft light, like a window off to one side, and never sit with a bright window behind you. For the background, a slim Walten book shelf (35 cm wide) fits beside most desks. Just don't change height mid-call, since your mic may pick up the motor.

Is a moving desk safe with kids and pets?

It is, with a little care. The desk moves slowly, but it can't see what's underneath, and to a five-year-old it's basically a ride.

  • Look under the desk before lowering it. Toys, a cat or your chair's armrests can get caught.
  • Keep a gap from window sills and wall shelves so the top can't catch on the way up.
  • Teach kids the buttons are off limits, and switch off at the socket when you step away.

The motor hums for a few seconds. If a baby naps nearby, change height before nap time.

Common standing desk mistakes at home

  • Standing for hours on day one instead of building up.
  • Leaving the chair low when the desk is at 70 cm, so your shoulders creep up.
  • Cutting cables to length at sitting height.
  • Never using the standing height. Make every call your cue.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I stand at a standing desk per day?

Start with standing spells of about 15 to 30 minutes and switch every 30 to 60 minutes. Many people build up to a couple of hours of standing in total, spread across the day. Check with your doctor first if you have a medical condition.

Is a standing desk better than a normal desk for work from home?

For long days, or a desk shared by people of different heights, usually yes, because you can change position and set each person's height. A normal desk costs less and needs no power point. For occasional work from home, a fixed desk is often enough.

Can I use a standing desk with just a laptop?

Yes, but raise the laptop on a stand so the screen top is near eye level, and use a separate keyboard and mouse at elbow height. Otherwise you'll either look down at the screen or reach up to type.

What happens to an electric standing desk during a power cut?

The controls need power, so you can't change the height until the supply returns. If cuts are common, ask your electrician whether the desk's socket can run on your inverter or UPS.

How do I manage cables on a standing desk?

Plug everything into one extension board tied under the top, so only one cable runs to the wall. Raise the desk fully, leave that cable a little slack, and clip it down one leg.

Is a sit stand desk worth it in a small Indian home?

It can be. A straight sit-stand desk takes about the same floor space as a regular one, around 120 x 60 cm, and needs no drilling in a rented flat. You'll need a socket nearby and approx. 75 to 90 cm behind it for your chair.

Making your standing desk for work from home a habit

A standing desk for work from home pays off in small daily routines. Pick a spot near a socket, save two heights, sort the cables once at full height, and let calls be your cue to stand.
