Wall Mounted TV Unit Design Guide: Size, Height and Installation Tips

A wall mounted TV unit is a shelf or slim cabinet fixed to the wall under your TV, and in most Indian flats it's the easiest way to free up floor space and get the wires off the floor. Say you've just moved into a 2BHK and the new 55 inch TV is still in its box. Before you call the carpenter, work out how wide, how high, what your wall is made of and how much storage you'll really use.

Is a wall mounted TV unit right for your home?

In a city flat, floor space is precious. With the unit on the wall, the room looks bigger and mopping gets quicker. A toddler can't pull the set-top box off a shelf 60 cm up, and the wires hide behind the unit.

It isn't for everyone, though. If you need lots of closed storage, or your wall is damp or hollow, a floor unit may suit you better.

Wall mounted or floor-standing: which suits your room?

Feature Wall mounted Floor-standing
Floor space Leaves the floor free Takes up floor area
Storage Usually slim shelves; some add a cabinet Usually more cabinets and closed shelves
Installation Needs drilling and the right wall plugs No drilling for the unit itself
Child and pet safety Devices sit higher Lower shelves within reach
Rented homes Needs the owner's OK to drill Moves with you, no holes
Best for Compact halls, bedrooms, minimal homes Large living rooms, lots of storage

Don't want to drill at all? Look at our floor-standing TV units. The Rowlet TV Unit and the Fenily are listed with free assembly by the seller.

What size wall mounted TV unit do you need for your TV?

TV sizes are measured corner to corner, so a 55 inch TV is only about 122 cm wide. Pick a unit a little wider than the screen, otherwise the TV looks like it's balancing on a plank. Mark switchboards and windows on the wall with masking tape first.

TV size Screen width x height (approx.) Suggested unit width (approx.) Bluewud options (listed TV size)
32 inch 71 x 40 cm (2'4" x 1'4") 75 to 100 cm Reynold Standard, 75 cm; Kunsua, 80 cm (both up to 32")
43 inch 95 x 54 cm (3'1" x 1'9") 110 to 130 cm Coober Large, 110 cm; Aero Large, 120 cm (both up to 50")
50 inch 111 x 62 cm (3'8" x 2') 120 to 150 cm Aero Large, 120 cm; Primax Grande, 157.5 cm (both up to 50")
55 inch 122 x 68 cm (4' x 2'3") 140 to 160 cm Kunsua Large, 140 cm; Primax Solo, 156 cm; Darien, 160 cm
65 inch 144 x 81 cm (4'9" x 2'8") 160 to 180 cm Wilbrome, 180 cm (up to 65")

Which TV unit works for a 32 inch TV?

It's the usual bedroom or 1RK size, and the 75 cm Reynold Standard or 80 cm Kunsua is plenty. Honestly, at 32 inches the exact width matters less.

What about a 43 inch TV?

We don't list a unit made exactly for 43 inches, so go one size up to a unit rated up to 50 inches, like the Coober Large or Aero Large. A 42 inch rating falls just short, so don't gamble.

Which wall mounted TV unit fits a 55 inch TV?

Look for roughly 140 to 160 cm. The Darien adds a storage cabinet, while the Kunsua Large and Primax Solo are slimmer shelves. For 65 inches, the 180 cm Wilbrome is the one.

How high should a TV unit be from the floor?

Sitting in your usual spot, the centre of the screen should be at your eye level or slightly below. Any higher and your neck will complain by the second innings of a cricket match.

Where you watch from Eye level and screen centre (approx.) Top of TV unit, 43 to 55" TV (approx.)
Regular sofa 100 to 110 cm (3'3" to 3'7") 60 to 70 cm (2' to 2'4")
Low sofa, diwan or floor seating 80 to 95 cm (2'7" to 3'1") 40 to 55 cm (1'4" to 1'10")
Bed, sitting up against the headboard 115 to 125 cm (3'9" to 4'1") 75 to 90 cm (2'6" to 3')

Say your eyes are about 105 cm from the floor on the sofa, and your 55 inch TV's screen is about 68 cm tall. Half of 68 is 34, so the screen bottom lands at about 71 cm. Allow 5 to 10 cm for the frame and stand, and the top of the unit goes at roughly 61 to 66 cm. Try it with your own sofa; it takes two minutes.

How far should the sofa be from the TV?

A common guide is about 1 to 1.5 times the screen diagonal for 4K, and 1.5 to 2.5 times for Full HD. Treat these as approx. ranges, not rules.

TV size 4K / Ultra HD (approx.) Full HD (approx.)
32 inch 0.8 to 1.2 m (2.5 to 4 ft) 1.2 to 2 m (4 to 6.5 ft)
43 inch 1.1 to 1.6 m (3.5 to 5 ft) 1.6 to 2.7 m (5 to 9 ft)
50 inch 1.3 to 1.9 m (4 to 6 ft) 1.9 to 3.2 m (6 to 10.5 ft)
55 inch 1.4 to 2.1 m (4.5 to 7 ft) 2.1 to 3.5 m (7 to 11.5 ft)
65 inch 1.7 to 2.5 m (5.5 to 8 ft) 2.5 to 4.1 m (8 to 13.5 ft)

Say your sofa is 2.5 m from the TV wall. That suits a 50 or 55 inch Full HD TV, or a 65 inch 4K at the far end of its range. Leave room to walk past any coffee table in between.

Which wall mounted TV unit design suits a living room or hall?

Is a slim floating shelf enough?

If all you have is a set-top box, a Wi-Fi router and two remotes, yes. The Aero Large is 11 cm tall and weighs 7 kg, and the Primax Solo is 13 cm tall. See more slim set-top box stands.

When do you need a wall mounted TV unit with storage?

When the spare remotes and that HDMI cable you might need someday have nowhere to go. The Darien wall mount TV unit pairs a storage cabinet with shelves across 160 cm. Keep the set-top box and router on an open shelf, though. Most remotes are infrared and need a clear line to the box, and a router stays cooler in the open.

What if you want the unit to frame the TV?

The Primax Grande (94 to 104 cm tall, depending on size) and the Primax TV Unit (97 cm tall) rise around the screen for a built-in look.

Where do the Diwali diyas and decor go?

Come Diwali, the open shelf by the TV is where the lights and a small idol end up. Use LED diyas or fairy lights there, and keep real flames away from the wood and screen. Floating shelves beside the TV give festive decor its own space.

What is the best wall mounted TV unit design for a bedroom?

Bedrooms usually take a 32 or 43 inch TV, and the bed and wardrobe have already claimed the floor. Fix the unit a little higher (see the bed row above), since you'll watch propped against the headboard. The Kunsua and Coober Large are 23.5 cm deep, so they stay clear of wardrobe doors. Avoid the wall opposite a window, or glare will wash out the picture.

Can you put up a wall mounted TV unit in a rented flat?

Usually, yes, but ask your landlord first and get the yes on WhatsApp, which helps when the deposit is settled. If you're allowed only a few holes, choose a light shelf: the Aero Large weighs 7 kg, while the taller Primax TV Unit weighs 14.8 kg. Wall putty and a dab of paint hide small holes when you move out. If the answer is no holes at all, go floor-standing. That's a perfectly good choice.

How do you fix a TV unit on brick, concrete or drywall?

Knock first: a dull, solid sound usually means brick or concrete, and a hollow one means gypsum board.

Brick and concrete walls

Most Indian homes have brick or RCC walls, which hold wall-fixed furniture well. Use a masonry bit and wall plugs that match your screws. Avoid any wall with seepage after the monsoon, because damp can damage engineered wood and loosen fixings.

Drywall and gypsum board

Be careful here. Ordinary plugs can pull out of board under load, so screw into the frame behind it or use heavy-duty hollow-wall anchors. For a wide or heavy unit, I'd call an experienced carpenter.

Step-by-step installation

  1. Check for hidden wiring and pipes, and don't drill directly above or below a switchboard.
  2. Mark the height and draw a level line with a spirit level.
  3. Drill and plug with the right bit for your wall.
  4. Fix and level the unit, following the installation guide.
  5. Hide the cables behind the unit or in a PVC raceway painted the wall colour, and leave a gap around the set-top box and router.

Most Bluewud wall units are listed as DIY: fit it yourself or arrange a carpenter. The Primax Grande, Primax Solo and Kunsua listings say hardware and an installation guide are included.

Which direction should a TV unit face as per Vastu?

Popular Vastu guidance links the south-east with fire and electrical appliances, so many families put the TV on the south-east side, or on the south or east wall. Many also avoid a TV facing the bed, since a dark screen reflects like a mirror. Treat these as traditional preferences; glare and viewing distance matter more day to day.

How do Bluewud's wall mounted TV units compare?

All are engineered wood with a natural wood grain finish, and most are listed as DIY. Dimensions are length x breadth x height.

Model Listed TV size Dimensions Colour options Best for
Reynold (Standard) Up to 32" 75 x 30 x 30 cm Wood grain finish Small bedrooms

What mistakes should you avoid?

The most common one is buying a unit rated below your TV size. Close behind is fixing the TV too high because the wall looked empty. People also use brick plugs in drywall and pile heavy things at the ends of open shelves.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right TV unit height from floor?

Fix it so the centre of the screen is near your seated eye level. On a regular sofa that's approx. 100 to 110 cm (3'3" to 3'7"), putting the top of the unit at approx. 60 to 70 cm (2' to 2'4") for a 43 to 55 inch TV.

What size TV unit is right for a 43 inch TV?

A 43 inch TV is about 95 cm wide, so go for a unit of roughly 110 to 130 cm. Pick one rated up to 50 inches, such as the Bluewud Coober Large or Aero Large.

Which wall mounted TV unit is best for a 55 inch TV?

Look for a unit of roughly 140 to 160 cm that's rated for 55 inches. The Bluewud Darien adds a storage cabinet, while the Kunsua Large and Primax Solo are slimmer shelves.

What are standard wall mounted TV unit dimensions?

There's no single standard size. Bluewud wall units range from 60 cm wide (the compact Maisy) to 180 cm (the Wilbrome, for TVs up to 65 inches), with depths of about 23.5 to 36.5 cm.

Can I fix a TV unit on a drywall?

Yes, but take care. Ordinary plugs can pull out of gypsum board, so screw into the frame behind it or use heavy-duty hollow-wall anchors. For a heavy unit, ask an experienced carpenter.

Which direction is best for a TV unit as per Vastu?

Popular Vastu guidance suggests the south-east side of the room, or the south or east wall. These are traditional preferences, so balance them with glare, wiring and viewing distance.
