Height Adjustable Study Table Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right One
Your daughter has board exams next year, you take office calls from the bedroom, and you both want the one study table in the house. A height adjustable study table solves this: it moves up and down at a button press, so each of you sets it to your own elbow height. To choose one, check the height range against every user, pick electric for daily use, get a top that fits your laptop or monitor, and look for a steady frame and a clear warranty.
For the daily sit-stand routine once it arrives, see our guide to a standing desk for work from home.

What is a height adjustable study table?
It's a desk with telescopic metal legs that raise or lower the top, also sold as a sit-stand desk or standing desk. Electric models use a motor and a button panel; manual ones use a crank or a lever. Either way, you fit the desk to your body instead of the other way round.
A normal study table is fixed at about 72 to 76 cm (roughly 29 to 30 inches). That's too high for a 5-foot teenager, too low for a 6-foot father, and nobody can stand at it.
Is it worth paying more than for a regular study table?
Honestly, it depends on how many hours someone sits there and how many people share it.
| Feature | Height adjustable study table | Regular study table |
|---|---|---|
| Desk height | Adjustable (Bluewud Wrick: 70 to 110 cm) | Fixed, usually 72 to 76 cm |
| Sit and stand | Yes | Sitting only |
| Shared by family members | Easy, each person sets their height | One height for everyone |
| Built-in storage | Usually open top, add shelves or organisers | Often has drawers and shelves |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Long study or work hours, shared desks, teens and adults | Budget setups, shorter daily use, extra storage |
If you need storage on a tight budget, a regular study table such as the Corbyn Plus (100 x 55 cm, built-in monitor stand, from Rs 3,599) is the sensible buy.
The adjustable desk earns its price when someone spends four or more hours a day at it, or when people of different heights take turns. Picture a 2BHK where the kids use it for online classes in the morning and you take it over after lunch. One desk that resets in seconds costs less than two, and takes half the floor space.
Electric, manual crank or gas spring: which type should you get?
| Type | How it adjusts | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric (motorised) | Buttons on a control panel; many have memory presets | Quick, effortless, easy to switch often | Needs a power point; costs more |
| Manual crank | Turn a handle to raise or lower | No electricity needed; lower price | Slow, so people rarely switch height |
| Lever or gas spring | Squeeze a lever and lift | Fast and silent | Usually smaller tops and lower load |
| Foldable or bed laptop table | A few preset positions | Very cheap and portable | Only for a laptop; not a full desk |
For daily use, I'd go electric almost every time. If changing height takes one button press, you'll do it. If it takes forty turns of a crank, you'll do it twice in the first week and then leave the desk at one height for good.
One practical point for Indian homes: an electric desk won't move during a power cut; it just stays where it was. If your area gets long cuts, use an inverter-backed socket. And if you mostly work from the bed, a portable laptop table costs a fraction and folds away.
What should you check before you buy a height adjustable study table?
Eight things matter, and the first two rule out most options.
How much height range do you need?
The lowest setting has to suit the shortest person sitting, and the highest the tallest person standing. Our Wrick desks go from 70 cm to 110 cm (27.5 to 43.3 inches). On the height chart below, 110 cm covers standing for most people up to about 5'11", and 70 cm is roughly the sitting height for someone around 5'10" to 6'.
How big should the tabletop be?
For a laptop, books and a lamp, 100 to 120 cm wide and 60 cm deep is comfortable. With one or two monitors, go for 120 cm or more, ideally with a monitor shelf. At 60 cm deep, the screen sits roughly an arm's length away instead of in your face.
Leave about 75 to 90 cm (approx.) behind the desk for the chair, or you'll bang it into the bed or almirah every time you get up. Our small bedroom ideas help with tight layouts.
Do you need memory presets?
If you live alone, they're a nice extra. If two or more people share the desk, they're close to essential, because nobody wants to inch up and down hunting for their height. You press 1, your son presses 2.
How do you know the frame will be stable?
Wobble shows up at standing height. Look for a steel frame with wide feet. Floors in older flats aren't always level, so test the desk where it'll live and put a thin packer under a foot if it rocks.
How much weight will it carry?
Add up the monitors, books and CPU, pick a desk rated comfortably above that, and confirm the figure on the listing.
Which tabletop material suits Indian weather?
Ours use high-grade prelaminated particle board with a natural wood grain finish on a metal frame. It wipes clean easily but, like any engineered wood, dislikes standing water, so keep it away from damp walls in the monsoon. For daily care, wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, dry it straight away and use a coaster under hot chai.
Should you get a straight desk or an L-shape?
A straight desk fits most bedrooms. An L-shape suits a corner and anyone who needs a writing area and a computer area at once, like a commerce student with registers on one side and a laptop on the other. Ours needs a clear 150 x 150 cm corner plus chair room.
What about assembly and warranty?
Ours arrive flat-packed with the hardware and a detailed installation guide, so you can fit it yourself or call a carpenter. Plan for two people, because the top is awkward to flip alone. The Wrick range carries a 2-year warranty on manufacturing defects.
How high should a height adjustable study table be for your height?
The right height puts your elbows at about 90 degrees with your shoulders relaxed. These ranges are approximate, so fine-tune by feel.
| Your height | Sitting desk height (approx.) | Standing desk height (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 4'11" to 5'1" (150 to 155 cm) | 58 to 61 cm | 94 to 97 cm |
| 5'2" to 5'4" (157 to 163 cm) | 61 to 64 cm | 98 to 101 cm |
| 5'5" to 5'7" (165 to 170 cm) | 64 to 67 cm | 102 to 105 cm |
| 5'8" to 5'10" (173 to 178 cm) | 67 to 70 cm | 106 to 109 cm |
| 5'11" to 6'1" (180 to 185 cm) | 70 to 73 cm | 110 to 113 cm |
To measure, sit with your feet flat, drop your shoulders and bend your elbows to 90 degrees. Have someone measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm, then repeat it standing in your usual home slippers.
Say you're 5'4" and your son is 5'10". You'd sit at about 61 to 64 cm and stand at 98 to 101 cm; he'd sit at 67 to 70 cm and stand at 106 to 109 cm. Both standing heights fit a 70 to 110 cm range. For sitting, the 70 cm lowest setting suits him but is a few centimetres above your elbows, so raise your chair to match and use a footrest. With a gas-lift chair, that takes ten seconds.
Which height adjustable study table suits students, kids and adults?
For school and college students
Coaching, online classes, then self-study late into the night: that's a lot of sitting. Standing for a chapter of reading breaks it up. A 120 x 60 cm top holds a laptop, two open books and a lamp, and a few desk organisers keep the stationery off it.
For younger kids
I'll be straight with you. Young children often need a sitting height well below 70 cm, so a 70 cm desk only works with a raised chair and a footrest, which a wriggly seven-year-old won't love. A lower fixed study table with an adjustable chair is simpler until the teenage years.
For adults working from home
Go electric, with presets and room for a monitor, and don't skimp on the chair. The Zylo mesh office chair has lumbar support and a breathable mesh back, handy in a warm room without AC. The Flexa study chair is the step up, rated for 100 kg against the Zylo's 90 kg. See more work from home furniture.
How do the Bluewud Wrick desks compare?
All three are electric, with white metal legs, a European Oak finish engineered wood top and a 2-year warranty on manufacturing defects.

Which Wrick should you buy?
Mostly on a laptop? Get the Wrick Solo, lift the laptop on a riser like the Festvi monitor stand and use a separate keyboard to spare your neck.
With one or two monitors, the Wrick Plus is worth the extra Rs 1,400. Its fixed shelf holds the screens up and back, leaving the desk free for papers.
For a full workstation, the Wrick L-Shape gives you one arm for the computer and the other clear for writing.
What should you set up on day one?
Save your sitting height (elbows at 90 degrees) and standing height as presets. Raise the monitor so its top edge is at or slightly below eye level, leave cable slack for the full travel, and check that no window sill or bed frame is in the way.
How long to stand and how often to switch is covered in our guide to a standing desk for work from home. The short version: alternate through the day rather than stand for hours.
What mistakes do people make when buying one?
- Checking only the maximum height. The lowest setting matters just as much for shorter users.
- Buying too small a top. The monitor ends up too close and the books end up on your lap.
- Forgetting the chair space behind the desk.
- Skipping the chair. The desk is only as good as the posture your chair lets you hold.
Frequently asked questions
Is a height adjustable study table worth it?
Yes, if you study or work at a desk for several hours a day, or if two or more family members share one desk. Each person gets the right height, and you can switch between sitting and standing. For light, occasional use, a regular study table is enough.
What is the ideal study table height in cm?
Standard fixed study tables are about 72 to 76 cm high. The right height for you is the one that puts your elbows at about 90 degrees, which works out to roughly 61 to 70 cm sitting and 98 to 109 cm standing for most people between 5'2" and 5'10".
Is a height adjustable study table good for kids?
It can be, as long as the lowest height matches the child's seated elbow height, or the child uses a raised chair with a footrest. Desks that start at 70 cm suit teenagers and adults best. Younger children are usually better off with a lower fixed table and an adjustable chair.
Electric or manual height adjustable desk: which is better?
Electric is better for daily use, because changing height takes a button press, so you actually switch between sitting and standing. Manual crank desks cost less and need no power point, but they're slow to adjust.
What size height adjustable study table do I need?
For a laptop and books, 120 x 60 cm is comfortable. For one or two monitors, choose a 120 cm desk with a monitor stand. For separate study and computer areas, an L-shape desk such as a 150 x 150 cm model works well, if you have the corner.
How do I take care of an engineered wood desk top?
Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away. Use coasters for hot or wet cups, keep it out of strong direct sunlight, and keep it away from damp walls during the monsoon.
Ready to choose your height adjustable study table?
Start with the people, not the product. Note everyone's height, look up their numbers in the chart, and measure the spot, chair space included. Then the right height adjustable study table picks itself: the Wrick Solo for a laptop, the Plus for monitors, the L-Shape for a corner workstation. Compare them side by side in our study table collection.
